A young boy once went to his mother and said, “Mom I have become an adult. I have turned eighteen and have a driver’s license, I can vote legally. The country treats me as an adult so you also need to treat me as an adult.”

“So going forward, I will eat what I want. I don’t need to take permission from you because I am an adult. You don’t need to ask where I am going and when I will come back because I am an adult. I have my friends., I will go where I please, when I please because I’m an adult. And I will come back when I please. You need to respect my independence because I’m an adult,” he continued. “Mom, I want to ensure that there is no confusion going forward. We can respect each other’s space because I have become an adult.”

Mom said, “Son, I am so proud of you that you cleared up my confusion and clarified that you have become an adult and ought to be treated that way going forward. Since you have become an adult, you have to start paying for your food now in this house and in case you need anything special, there will be a special price for it. So, we need to respect your choices because you have become an adult and if at all you are unwell, you will make your own arrangement for medical and nursing care because you have become an adult. And you can go and come wherever you want to because you have become an adult but remember that you have to enter the house before 10’o clock as me and my other children will be sleeping. But you can stay where you want because you have become an adult. And going forward, if at all we have any discussions in house that lead to an argument, and if it becomes quarrelsome, we respect your feelings and shall call the police to settle the matter because you have become an adult.”

Upon hearing all this, the boy just hugs his mother and says, “Mom I don’t want to become an adult. I’m happy the way I am.” Folks, we need to understand what adulthood is all about. Adulthood has nothing to do with age, it has something to do with maturity. There are people below 18 who are matured, there are people who are over 30-40 who lack maturity and still are not adults. Maturity means accepting responsibilities, caring for one another, respecting each other, living a meaningful life with integrity and learn to be a giver.

Keep in mind there are two kinds of ppl in this world – takers and givers. Takers eat well, Givers sleep well.
