Where Did I Start
In school, I was a backbencher, troubling the front benchers. My academics are I failed in my 10th. I am a B.Com, third division.
I come from a business family that inherited coal mines in India which were nationalized. We came on the streets.
When my daughter was born, I had to sell some of the last pieces of my mother’s jewellery to get a release from the hospital.
I tried my hands on three businesses with no money and failed in all. Finally, on November 13, 1975, I left India. Initially, I went to Toronto and started life with a bucket in my hand, washing cars door to door for a year and a half.
Then totally by accident, I got into selling life insurance where I was almost fired within the first three months for non-performance.
Turning Points
I attended a program by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. That’s the time I realized that, I kept feeling all my life and kept blaming the whole world for my failures, not realizing that I was my own biggest problem that was my turning point. Nothing changed outside, something changed inside and the direction in my life changed. Thereafter, I moved to the US and got into three businesses. I collaborated with a company out of California in 1984, started the New Jersey operations with no clients and eventually sold my company with close to 500 clients.
Why do I share my life story with you? For two reasons:
I kept failing all my life and kept blaming the whole world for my failures, not realizing that I was my own biggest problem.
Nothing changed outside but something changed inside and the direction of my life changed.
I learned that there are more people in this world who are not working than there are people who are unemployed.
While selling life insurance I was on commission and would only get paid if I sold but there were many people on salary who were not doing their job. That is the time I learnt the difference between making money and earning money. Making money is criminal and earning money is spiritual, because when you earn money then you put your energy and ethics behind it.
Giving Back
When I saw my own life change, I realized that it was time to give back. Someone gave direction in my life. Had they not given me the direction I may still have been washing cars. That’s the time I realized that it was my turn to pay it forward.
I started volunteering my time in Maximum Security Prisons in the US. I started teaching them attitude and self-esteem programs. I saw lives change. After that, I decided that it was time to take my message to the world.
